L egacy is a highly qualified team of archaeologists and historians who specialize in assessing the effects of construction on historic and prehistoric sites. The Legacy team has more than 20 years of experience helping government agencies and private companies comply with state and federal legislation that protects significant archaeological sites. Over the years we have developed excellent working relationships with regulatory agencies and have become thoroughly familiar with state and federal guidelines that apply to the construction industry. Much of our experience has been working with planning and design engineers on transportation, utility, and land development projects. We focus on making this collaboration work efficiently by incorporating new technology with traditional archaeological research methods. Technology integrates archaeological information with construction design plans accurately and streamlines the planning and design process. Legacy occupies a 5,000 square-foot renovated historic former church in the Lakewood Historic District in Durham, North Carolina. The facilities include offices, an archaeological laboratory, and library with more than 2,000 reference books on history, archaeology, folklore, architecture, and other subjects. In addition, Legacy’s location in Durham is within one mile of the Duke University Library that includes the John Hope Franklin Collection of documents and records pertaining to history and culture in the southeastern U.S., and the Forest History Society that has been established for more than 50 years and during that time has collected historical data on the utilization, management, and appreciation of forest-related resources including forest industries, historical geography, land-use, landscape architecture, and mining. Legacy is also less than 30 miles from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that offers historic research facilities at the Southern Historical Collection, Southern Folklife Collection, and the Southern Oral History Program, as well as the Research Laboratories of Archaeology, that provide access to their artifact collections from more than 7,000 sites in the southeastern U.S., photographic collections, and digital image collections. Legacy is also within 30 miles of the North Carolina State Archives, the State Historic Preservation Office, Office of State Archaeology, and the Geological Survey Office in Raleigh. Resources at the archives include genealogical and historical documents and maps of North Carolina. Legacy has three 4WD field vehicles and two trailers that are used for carrying equipment on large-scale projects. In addition to standard field equipment (shovels, probes, augers, trowels, and screens), Legacy owns three GPS units and a Nikon DTM Total Station.
